-It was awful ending!!1!! -...wait! Is that was an Kubrick idea?! Then fine, it was so deep, and Spielberg did it for beloved friend! You full of hypocritical bullshit here Critic, sorry :( This is weak and unnecessary part of the move. And background dosen't make it stronger or even needed.

why not just have the people who made him say they will make him real and then simulate the perfect life he wanted while preparing to destroy him. A lifetime of memories would be playing out for him in seconds of real time contrasted with the harsh imagery of david being destroyed cutting back to a shot of the mother who abandoned him to close the movie. I would’ve liked an ending more like that much better.

You don't understand how much this movie messed me up as a kid. I LOVED this movie. I cried for over an hour after the credits rolled and kept hugging my mom, telling her how much I loved her. I was 11 and this movie gave me severe separation anxiety with my mom that the freaking Land Before Time kick-started. I didn't get over it until I was 19. (> v

I kinda like the ending. It's surreal, creepy, sweet, and so bizarre I can't help but be fascinated by it. I never really saw it as "sappy", it's more like a mindfuck, honestly. But to be fair, that's in part due to how bad and sappy it is too. It has so many strange overtones, religious, fairy tale, sci-fi, incredibly depressing implications (how long was David conscious underwater? What will his life be like after this "happy ending"?), all mixed together in a baffling "happy" ending that is seemingly unecessary. I'm fond of it, but it's hard to explain in a comment why. I didn't know the story about Kubrick and Spielberg before this review, and honestly it makes it even MORE interesting. It's this gentle tone mixed with really dark implications that just makes me wonder. In that way, I find it quite powerful, esp when combined with the story of its making. It's the kind of movie I feel like could be genius if it had been handled differently. Maybe I just like it for what I think it was trying to do. The rest of the movie was pretty forgettable. But that ending is too bizarre not to remember.

I know nobody cares, but this history was ALSO trying to adapt one of Isaac Asimov`s short tales... One that was added to the compilation book "I, robot" (which has nothing to do with the movie under the same name), and that ends little after the "almost drowns the real one in the pool" scene...

Well the future robots were cool-looking at least. Pretty interesting design for a machine. Its like what the I Robot machines would look like fifty years later or something. Don't ask me how I arrived at this conclusion, booze probably.

I hate this movie. I really do. Like, it's up there with "The Village" with how much I hate it. I watched it once years ago, and I was so miserable at the end, I vowed never to watch it again. The human characters are awful, the androids that the audience are supposed to empathize with are slaughtered/blown up/ripped apart/abandoned/covered with acid, and in the end, when you just want the emotional anguish to stop, that ending hits you right in the nutsack. I just....whenever I see that it's on, I cringe away and desperately find something else to watch. I just can't get over what the mother did. She was told (IN ADVANCE!!!) to not push the button unless she was absolutely sure and thus will be responsible for the consequences. And what does she do?! SHE PUSHES THE BUTTON AND THEN ABANDONS DAVID! I don't care what kind of tears she cried while doing it, she left a little robot boy (WHO LOVED HER UNCONDITIONALLY) in the woods, and then just went back to her everyday life, and what? Never thought about him again?! How did she live with herself? Or did she justify it that as long as he wasn't destroyed by his makers then he's okay and she can be guilt free? Or maybe, and I really want to believe this, she goes home and finds out that her little shit of a real son Martin caused the whole fiasco because he was jealous of David, and she fell for it. The humans are selfish, entitled, and ignorant of what they created until it serves their purposes. David was viewed as a replacement, a threat, a fake, and finally, a scientific breakthrough, even though he had attained a measure of self and emotional cognizance that realized that his whole life was a lie, an experiment, and that no one cared about HIM, just what he represented for android evolution. No wonder he pitched himself off a building in an existential crisis. Only other machines had any compassion for him, and even the aliens (the OUT OF NOWHERE ALIENS!?) were at least pitying enough to give him one good day in a fantasy. And yeah, David really screwed over Teddy just leaving him like that, OMG.

TBH, the TMZ segments were too true to be funny. I absolutely loathe those people for their soulless and ghoulish behavior. The NC segments with the actual film were beautiful, funny and insightful, but the TMZ subplot? Nah, man. The people at TMZ can best be described as dumpster fires posing as human beings. I can see where it was SUPPOSED to be funny, but I couldn't laugh at it. I've held an insane grudge against the paparazzi since August of 1997. There's nothing good about what they do.

@Channel Awesome Actually there were times that Steven Spielberg could be dark at times too. Including when it comes to exploring thought provoking themes. 1: Close Encounters of the Third Kind Where he was exploring the phenomenon of both the UFO and Alien Abduction. 2: Schindler's List The Jewish Holocaust and the means of which trying to save some of them from the genocide. 3: Jaws A blood thirsty Great White Shark 4: Twilight Zone: The Movie Exploring supernatural episodes from the same named TV Show. 5: Minority Report The mystery of predicting a murder before it happens, and rather the system can be manipulated. As you can tell he does have an excellent history regarding doing films that had dark themes to explore.

1 of my favorite movies. I just wish it wasn't so emotional. If Kubrick made this film, I wonder how his version would had turned out. Since this is supposed to be a Pinocchio like film, here's who I think are the equivalence : 1) David - Pinocchio 2) Henry, Monica, & Professor Hobby - Geppetto 3 ) Martin - Figaro & Lampwick 4) Teddy & Gigolo Joe - Jiminy Cricket 5) Lord Johnson Johnson - Stromboli & Coachman

I think if you started it under the ice, slowly, quietly, then had teddy turn and ask "Why are we waiting?" THEN cut to all the stuff about him being built, his mother, the other son, the rouge city shizz, when you cut back to him under the ice at the end of all of that you'll KNOW it carries on. You'll be invested. And when the alien-bot show up, give them David's outline and voice but with the electronics of Spielberg's bots, removing the ambiguity. They don't bring back his mother immediately- instead, they try to find out how such an old machine can still function. It's implied this is because he still has the drive to find his mother- this was his program afterall. So, because these evolved robots are all descended from his design and can love, they find a way to bring her back. Not for just one day, but only inside the simulation.
