I think this is an extremely exciting piece of technology. I'm a little bit surprised that they developed this for audiophiles - I'd expect something like this to hit musician IEM (in-ear monitors) or hearing aid markets first. It's much easier to justify the massive pricetag if it's seen as an investment into your professional career or offers quality of life improvement.

If you need an inexpensive DAC that sounds like gold check out the HiFiBerry project. You can put one of these together on the cheap and you won't be disappointed. Honestly you guys should do a video about the project. Couldn't hurt.

You can have professional quality audio for 100$. You could get better by spending more, but the jump between "average" and "pro" is good enough, even for informed people. In exchange, you need to do some research to find what's "professional" quality and what's lies, and what frequency response spectrum is, for example.

People who buy headphones in the four digit price category don't make the decision by watching LTT videos. And people who buy these are not going to care if some bluetooth headphones have better battery life, or if it's not convenient to carry in your pocket, all they care is the sound quality and listening comfort.

Ok Linus, I get where you are with not wanting to spend 2grand on “headphones “, but as a musician that uses IEMs every week, that’s not a bad use of money. Sure you can use them for just listening to music, but that’s not what they are designed for. IEMs are specifically designed to allow musicians to here better on stage while not damaging their ears with the volume most stages have with a full band playing.

"the diaphragm is not physically connected to the voicecoil in case of electrostatic drivers" you said it in the video, i suggest to get your tech guys and try to figure out what is wrong with this sentence, there were so many other mistakes, it is embarassing really, just stick to simple pc stuff, leave actually explaining tech to others, you have 0 credibility anyway in this domain

Dude, they aren't for people like you and this isn't a solution for people to listen to music on their phones, these are IEM for musicians to use live. That is what these are setup for. You don't need a 12 hr battery for a gig, you don't need a DAC to get signal from the board, and this is meant to sit in a back pocket or clipped to the musician, not be with someone walking around listening to music and their phones. Look at who makes these, Shure, a live sound and mic company used by industry professionals.

3 dögum síðan
Louis

Honestly, these are actually for audiophiles lol. Their sound quality is much better than the large majority of high end IEMs ($1000+).

2 dögum síðan

+Bustopher Jones not everyone has that kind of money. You hook these up to a wireless unit and something like behringer rack mixer, a band can have great IEM for their gigs. Custom molded would be nice, and might be offered, but not necessary

Shure (or, Shure Brothers as us old-timers still call it) is a manufacturer of pro-grade audio gear. They've never really made a lot of consumer-level gear. The amp pack, the LEMO connector, and the huge price is familiar to any of us who have used Shure pro audio stuff. I've got to believe that this product is a derivative of some really high-end, niche pro product they for some special purpose. (Think space program, or intel.)

It took a while to realize that Linus isn't just now discovering quality audio. I first heard a $100K+ audio system when I was in my early 20s. It ruined me; I can't stand crap equipment. At this point in life, retired and with a moderate income, I can't afford a great audio system. I can, however, afford good headphones, a good DAC/amp, hi-end files from various sources , and (by far, most important) season tickets to the symphony.

Products made by companies like Shure are geared more towards audio professionals, musicians and producers. The average consumer will never know what astounding personal audio sounds like, because they have been listening to compressed, lossy formats and don't know any better. This is definitely geared towards those who do studio or live audio production.

3 dögum síðan
Master Drakthorian
Master Drakthorian

Ahahah more and more professional musicians do 320Kbps files because that and FLAC/AAC etc sounds EXACTLY the same, but lets not get into that whole argument can't convince audiosnobs that wasted space is wasted space. Even with studies that shows that 96% of the "Audiophiles" that claimed they could hear a difference in fact couldn't. Ignorance is bliss

Find it interesting he says price per performance can't be beat. As if he is an expert in the audiophile headphone hobby. Is it really his job to pretend to know everything? And 2000k for just over ear headphones isn't strange. Senheizer HD 850's have made it into a few twitch streamers rigs. A good over the ear set of phones can provide hours of comfortable listen as apposed to having the constant pressure of earbuds in your canal. Clickbait titles and misrepresented knowledge of the hobby. For shit like this you should go check out headfi website and or videos.

Never heard IEMs that can approach what full sized cans are capable of… if anyone can do it, it’s Shure, and at $2K I’m sure they came up with something good… but I remain skeptical. $2000 can also get me a pretty incredible pair of closed backs that I’m betting will stomp all over these in any scenario I’d need the isolation of an IEM.
