The Multi Axis Trainer, or MAT, is an icon of space exploration and astronaut training. But other than spinning round kids at Space Camp: what's it actually used for?
Thanks to Moriah and all the team at Space Camp! You can find out more about their programs for kids and for adults at www.spacecamp.com/

I went to space camp as a kid and rode in this MAT. If you've ever ridden a tire swing, it kind of feels like that, but it also goes upside down.

Ok, probably been asked before and I'm too lazy to go through all these wonderful comments. See I'm honest and complimentary so please forgive me. Right, Mercury and Apollo capsules spin chaotically but the shuttle didn't hence the MAT and Mastiff? type devices aren't used anymore, but neither is the shuttle. ISS crew are back using the Vostok? capsule and whatever Space X or Blue Origin or Orion comes up with, which would surely have similar spin characteristics to Mercury and Apollo?

So the fictional joystick and the "STABILIZE! You need to concentrate and STABILIZE!" from the movie Space Camp was not actually entirely fictional, it's just that the MAT is the theme park version of a training simulator for a scenario that no longer exists (except for the Russian capsules that are the main way of taking people to space now. And the long-delayed Orion capsule.)

When I went to Space Camp in Florida back in April 1990, they didn't let any of us ride on the spinny thing (something about how not everyone was tall enough so if they couldn't, nobody would)... but I got to see the Hubble launch live and in person so I didn't complain too much.
